What is a wart?
Warts and verrucae belong to the same family, effectively a verruca is a wart on the bottom of your foot. Warts and verrucae are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) which causes and increase in cell growth in the outer layer of skin (dermis).
How do you get them?
Warts and verrucae are contagious and spread via close contact. So skin on skin contact can lead to warts spreading, especially if the skin is damaged. It is therefore easier for people with conditions like eczema to be more prone to catching warts. Your immune system will also effect your ability to get warts and verrucae, which is why children are more prone to catching them. Verrucae are often caught in warm, moist environments such as swimming pools and showers.
How long do warts and verrucae last?
This varies hugely, sometimes the body will recognise warts and verruca relatively quickly and fight them off. Sometimes however warts and verrucae can last for years, with some never going. Warts and Verrucae are very clever and can "fly under the radar" due to their ability to not create an immune response.
